No film has ever pulled off a plot like this in quite such a unique and clever way. The cinematography and soundtrack brilliance from Wolf Creek shines through. Every actor bar Michael Vartan (Alias, Kitchen Confidential and One Hour Photo) is Australian (though Vartan did get a Southern Cross tattoo after starring in Rogue) and yet half of the characters are international tourists, which just goes to further show their acting mettle.Ĭreature-Features are pretty standard horror fair, and there's enough DVD's about giant crocodiles to kill a hundred zombies vinyl-Shaun of the dead style. But he pulls off this (relatively small) role in outstanding stride, as do the rest of them. It's as much of a different a role that John Jarratt could really have from Mick Taylor in Wolf Creek. Every one of these Aussies are worth their weight in Golden Globes. This is in such bad taste it crosses the line into brilliant black humor, and lightens the mood just when the viewer is in danger of developing intense crocodile phobia.Let me start of by commending the cast of Rogue made up of John Jarratt (Wolf Creek, Picnic at Hanging Rock and The Final Winter), Stephen Curry (The Castle, Thunderstruck, The Wog Boy and The King), Radha Mitchell (Silent Hill, The Crazies, Surrogates, Pitch Black and Man on Fire) and Sam Worthington (Somersault, Thunderstruck, Macbeth, Terminator: Salvation, Avatar and Clash of the Titans).
It seems like the perfect tour (until the croc attacks, of course!) As the closing credits roll, the music is a jaunty rendition of NEVER SMILE AT A CROCODILE. The scenes of the Australian river cruise are beautifully filmed. Animal lovers may find some scenes disturbing hopefully, no dogs or water buffaloes were harmed in the making of ROGUE. The crocodile often strikes the person we least expect, at a surprising time or place. The deaths are shocking, not because they are gory, but because they happen suddenly as the result of a single mistake, and the remaining characters - and the audience - are stunned. The most successful disaster films, such as the original POSEIDON ADVENTURE, offer people of all ages in a life-threatening situation where each person could potentially make it out safely.or not. Too many films show the characters getting picked off one by one (gory & depressing) others have main characters who are apparently bulletproof, so the audience may enjoy the action but never really worry about the stars getting killed.
This is key to enjoying a horror or a disaster movie because, in real life, few disasters result in EVERYBODY dying, and even fewer with everyone emerging unscathed. Best of all, some people die and others survive. No cookie-cutter college students with questionable acting ability in this movie! Nobody displays typical horror movie stupidity by going off alone, having sex, or taking drugs. The humans are different ages and have different personalities. The crocodile has brute strength and hunger the humans have their intelligence and the will to survive. Aside from the fact that the crocodile is larger than usual, it doesn't have any mutant super powers. An Australian tour boat breaks down on a tiny island that happens to be the territory of a giant crocodile. First, it's more of a disaster film than horror. But ROGUE, like JAWS, is a cut above your typical low-budget animal attack movie. I can't believe I'm giving a five-star rating to a film about a killer crocodile. According to the filmmakers it's about 7 meters long (about 23 feet), and there have been known sightings of crocs bigger than 25 feet, so a croc like the one in Rogue most definit ely exists which makes it even scarier. The croc stays pretty much hidden until about the last 10-15 minutes when you finally get to see it in full form, looks and sounds very realistic as it is CGI. It kinda seemed like it took a while to get going but once it does it's worth the wait. It's fairly short ending at about the 95 minute mark.
There are some pretty intense parts and it definitely keeps your interest the entire movie. I won't get into any details about the movie because that can be found elsewhere (IMDb).
